Content development covers a lot of territory depending on the job, but strong editing and rewriting skills are essential. I was fortunate to gain real-world editing experience working as a creative technical writer and scientific editor at NASA where we employed a three-stage editing process governed by the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) Style Manual. In this process, the first proof is checking format, the second read verifies subject and content validity, and the third proof focuses on spelling and grammatical errors. After applying this three-stage process, the edited copy goes back to the writer for a review and face-to-face consultation with the author to improve and refine the work. I always approach the editing process objectively and back up edits with examples and offer some edits as questions or suggestions rather than directives or criticism. Developing good content is a team effort.
